Ning and H. Lin (more: ATEL #17867) and confirmed by K.Sokolosky. Spectroscopy gathered for AT 2026rdg suggests that it is a highly reddened FeII-type nova. The BHTOM network started follow-up observations on July 2, 2026, approximately one day after initial discovery. Over 5000 measurements were obtained using a variety of different-sized telescopes, including a 14-inch reflector of the ROAD Observatory (Atacama, Chile), a 60-cm RC telescope of the University of Salerno (Italy), as well as amateur Seestar S30, S30 Pro and S50 telescopes. Photometric data were taken in U, B, V, R and I filters and subsequently transformed into Gaia Synthetic Photometry (GaiaSP) for consistency. Some observations from ROAD were taken without a filter, and those were transformed to Gaia DR3 (G) band. The event was also observed by the ATLAS and ZTF sky surveys. There are some archival measurements from 2MASS, WISE and SkyMapper surveys. The multi-band light curve in BHTOM shows a steady decline in brightness for the entire period of observations. Observations of the object with BHTOM will continue until the object returns to its quiet state. Further details and the full photometric dataset are available for download by registered users of the BHTOM.space platform. Daimon (UOsaka) Queries: alexandra.masegian@columbia.edu Posted: 6 Aug 2026; 19:07 UT Subjects:Infra-Red, Cataclysmic Variable, Nova, Transient We report the discovery and spectroscopic classification of a very bright NIR transient during the Galactic bulge survey carried out by the PRime-focus Infrared Microlensing Experiment (PRIME). PRIME is a 1.8m telescope with 1.56 square degree FOV (0.5 arcsec/pixel) located in Sutherland, South Africa at the South African Astronomical Observatory (Sumi et al. 2025). PRIME26ahygn was first detected as a candidate transient generated in our custom image reduction and subtraction pipeline based on the ZOGY algorithm (Zackay et al. 2016, De et al. 2020) at a H-band mag of 11.10 +/- 0.02 mag (in the Vega system) on UT 2026-03-28, and at J2000 coordinates RA 17:42:10.63 Dec -25:24:57.89 The transient is located 3.6 degrees away from the Galactic center. There is no source at this position in archival VVV H-band images, suggesting an outburst amplitude > 7 mags. The source has been subsequently slowly fading to H ~ 13.6 mag by 2026-08-05. On UT 2026-08-05, we obtained a near-infrared spectrum of the source with the SpeX spectrograph on the IRTF telescope as part of our program 2026B069 (PI: De). The reduced spectrum shows a steep red continuum with broad emission lines of He I, Pa gamma and Pa beta with FWHM ~ 1000 km/s. The large amplitude outburst, subsequent fading and spectrum with broad emission lines suggest the source to be a new classical nova towards the Galactic center. We encourage multi-wavelength follow-up of the source. We thank the IRTF staff for assistance with scheduling these observations. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Password Certification: Kishalay De (kd3038@columbia.edu) https://www.astronomerstelegram.org/?read=17945 ============================================================================== ============================================================================== This is an automatically-generated notice.
