La Mura (INAF - Astronomical Observatory of Cagliari) on behalf of the Fermi Large Area Telescope Collaboration Queries: lopez@llr.in2p3.fr Posted: 29 Oct 2025; 16:06 UT Subjects:Gamma Ray, >GeV, Request for Observations, AGN, Quasar The Large Area Telescope (LAT), one of the two instruments on the Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope, has observed renewed gamma-ray activity from a source positionally consistent with the compact steep spectrum quasar 3C 138, also known as 4FGL J0521.2+1637 (Abdollahi et al. 2022, ApJS, 260, 53), with radio coordinates R.A. = 80.29119 deg, Dec. = +16.63946 deg (J2000; Truebenbach & Darling, 2017, ApJS, 233, 3), and redshift z= 0.759 (Lynds et al. 1966, ApJ, 144, 1244). Preliminary analysis indicates that this source was in an elevated gamma-ray emission state on October 28, 2025, with a daily averaged gamma-ray flux (E>100MeV) of (0.7 +/- 0.2) X 10^-6 photons cm^-2 s^-1 (statistical uncertainty only). This corresponds to a flux increase of a factor of 180 relative to the average flux reported in the fourth Fermi-LAT catalog (4FGL-DR4, Ballet et al. 2023, arXiv:2307.12546). The corresponding photon index is 2.3 +/- 0.2, and is consistent with the 4FGL-DR4 value of 2.2 +/- 0.1 within the uncertainties. The Fermi LAT Collaboration has previously reported gamma-ray flaring activity from 3C 138 in ATels #16845, #17107 and #17180. Because Fermi normally operates in an all-sky scanning mode, regular gamma-ray monitoring of this source will continue. A preliminary light curve for 3C 138 can be accessed via the Fermi-LAT Light-Curve Repository at <a href="https://fermi.gsfc.nasa.gov/ssc/data/access/lat/LightCurveRepository/source.html?source_name=4FGL_J0521.2+1637">4FGL_J0521.2+1637</a>. Loesch Queries: markus@astro.uni-jena.de Posted: 29 Oct 2025; 20:01 UT Subjects:Comet We have carried out follow-up spectroscopic observations of the central part of the coma of comet C/2025 R2 with the Échelle spectrograph FLECHAS, which is installed at the 90 cm telescope of the University Observatory Jena. The comet was observed on 18 October 2025 directly before comet C/2025 A6, whose observations were already reported in ATel#17456. The instrument was operated in its 2x2 binning mode (R~7400) and one spectrum with an integration time of 600 s could be taken. During the spectroscopy of the comet, the fiber of the spectrograph, which has a diameter of 3.9 arcsec in the sky, was centered on the coma of C/2025 R2, to which the telescope was guided to correct for the high angular motion of the comet. In the wavelength range between 5000 and 7500 Å the spectrum of C/2025 R2 shows many emission features the most prominent ones are those of C<sub>2</sub>, NH<sub>2</sub>, and [OI]. Due to the velocity of the comet relative to the observation site, the detected emission features are blueshifted (by about 4 km/s), which agrees well with the expected RV value based on the current orbital solution of the comet. In contrast to C/2025 A6 no Sodium emission was detected in the spectrum of the coma of C/2025 R2, which was at a heliocentric distance of 0.95 au, while C/2025 A6 was only 0.71 au from the Sun. In order to measure the apparent brightness of C/2025 R2, its position in the sky and to study its morphology, the comet was also imaged simultaneously to the spectroscopic observations in the B-, V-, and R-band with the CCD-camera CTK-II, which is operated at the 25 cm Cassegrain auxiliary telescope of the observatory.
